Découverte en 1938 par un chasseur d'Aiguèze, les grottes de Saint Marcel présentent un interêt exceptionnel géologique, archéologique, spéléologique et touristique.
Prés de 40 km de galeries ont été répertoriées
par différents groupes spéléologiques qui continuent à
mettre à jour de nouveaux réseaux.
Les visiteurs accèderons à la partie aménagée grâce
au tunel creusé en 1988 à proximité de la route touristique.
La visite d'une durée d'un peu moins d'une heure permettra de découvrir
un parcours d'un intérêt particulier mettant en valeur :
l'immensité des salles, l'importance et la beauté des concrétions,
la vaste étendue des GOURS (bassins) uniques en Europe.
Un spectacle son et lumière et des jeux lumineux accompagneront les visiteurs tout au long de sa progression. Une reproduction d'une peinture rupestre d'une galerie voisine pourra être admirée.

Un vaste parking et une aire de pic-nic sont mis à la disposition du
public.
Un sentier botanique présentant la flore méridionale passe près
d'un dolmen et d'un menhir.
Dans le hall d'accueil, une exposition gratuite, intitulée "Préhistoire, 50 000 ans de présence Humaine", vous présente les traces d'une longue présence humaine à l'entrée naturelle des grottes de St. Marcel d'Ardèche lors d'une période qui s'étend de l'homme de Néandertal à l'homme d'aujourd'hui.
Les objets présentés proviennent essentiellement des fouilles réalisées par R. GILLES au cours des années 1980. Plusieurs reconstitutions suggèrent les conditions de vie au temps des chasseurs de Néandertal, au temps des paysans-éleveurs du néolithique, au temps des guerriers de "l'âge de bronze".
Discovered in 1838 by a hunter from Aiguèze (local village), the underground caves of Saint Marcel d'Ardèche offer an exceptional geological archeological, speleological and touristic interest.
About 40 km of galeries have been indexed thanks to different archeological
groups, who are still exploring nowadays.
By a tunnel dug in 1988 near the touristic road, visitors can reach accessible
part.
The visit, which takes about one hour, permits the visitor to discover a circuit of uncommon interest valorizing the vastness of the halls, the importance and the beauty of the concretions, and also the big extent of the ìGOURSî (natural pools) unique in Europe.
A sound and light show with lighting effects will escort the visitor all along his progression. A reproduction of a prehistoric painting which was discovered in an adjoining galery, can be admired.

A botanical footpath presenting the meridional flora passes near a dolmen and a menhir.
You can see in the entrance hall a free exhibition entitled "Préhistoire: 50 000 ans de présence humaine". It shows the foot-prints of a long-lasting human presence in the natural entering of the caves of St-Marcel-d'Ardèche, along a period that goes from the Neanderthal man to contemporary man.
The objects here disployed mainly come from the excavations worked out by R. GILLES during the '80's. Several reconstitutions are evoking the state of life of the Neanderthal hunters, of the stock-breeders and farmers of the Neolithic Age, of the warriors of the Bronze Age.
